Understanding Geothermal Heating and Cooling

The word “geothermal” is often used in the media, but not everyone understands what it means or how it functions. Geothermal heat pumps, simply put, are a cost-effective way to heat and cool your home or company. If set up properly, they can even provide free hot water.

No matter where we live or what atmosphere we live in, the earth’s temperature remains relatively constant a few feet under the surface. The temperature on the ground varies between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The ground temperature is colder than the air temperature in the winter and hotter than the air temperature in the summer. Instead of using the outside air temperature as the exchange medium, geothermal heat pumps use the constant temperature of the earth below the frost line. The earth loop is used to draw heat from the ground during the heating cycle. The machine distributes the heat it extracts from the earth through a traditional duct system. The heating phase is simply reversed in the cooling mode. Rather than collecting heat from the atmosphere, heat is removed from your home or business’s air and then returned to the earth loop or used to heat the water in your hot water tank.Find additional information at Vaughan Comfort Services.

Geothermal systems are divided into four categories. Closed-loop systems come in three varieties, with an open-loop system being the fourth. Commercial buildings, new development, and existing homes will all benefit from them.

Unlike traditional furnaces, which use fuel to produce heat, geothermal heat pumps transfer heat from the earth to your home or business using electricity. Geothermal energy is a fantastic investment that will help you save money on your bills year after year. Most homeowners see a 30 to 70% drop in their energy bills. These systems are less expensive to maintain and last longer than most heating and cooling systems.
